The History of the GCRC
The Adult GCRC has been continuously funded for the past 43 years. Between
1961 and 1980, the program with the greatest effect on the resources
of the GCRC was the transplant program. Although kidney transplantation
had been performed elsewhere, the first large group of successful
kidney transplants was performed at the University of Colorado on
the GCRC during 1962 and 1963 under the direction of Dr. Thomas Starzl.
In addition, Dr. Starzl also performed the first liver transplant in 1967
and ultimately developed an expansive program of hepatic transplantation
on the GCRC.
Since 1993, the GCRC has been under the direction of Dr.
Robert Eckel and the Center has been very active in contributing to the scientific
knowledge base in areas of Diabetes, Lipid Metabolism, Aging and Exercise,
Cancer, HIV & Aids, and Psychiatry. There are over 100 active protocols being
conducted on the GCRC. Satellite programs have been added at the National
Jewish Medical and Research Center and the University of Colorado at Boulder.
The addition of these two satellite programs has enhanced the study of respiratory
disorders and exercise physiology.
